Choose one Auto-Tune in Ableton Live

One-time connection

  1. Open Install Ableton Connection.command in this folder. It copies Key Lab’s four original Python files into Music/Ableton/User Library/Remote Scripts/PICH_Key_Lab under your Mac user folder. If your User Library is elsewhere, this installer does not configure it; use the default location for this build.
  2. Restart Key Lab, then restart Live so it discovers the new script.
  3. Open Live’s Settings → Tempo & MIDI (or Link, Tempo & MIDI in older versions). In one unused Control Surface slot, choose PICH Key Lab (it may appear as PICH_Key_Lab). Leave its Input and Output as None. Choose it in only one slot. No MIDI port pairing or Max for Live device is required by this implementation.
  4. For Real-Time X, connect and power on your Apollo. Enable an audio output in Live’s Audio Settings so its engine is running; VST3 did not accept Scale changes with the engine off. Load your licensed Auto-Tune on an empty test track. If Key and Scale are missing from Live’s device panel, enter Configure, expose those two parameters from the plug-in, leave Configure, and restore their starting values. Find never moves controls to expose or identify them.
  5. In Key Lab, analyze your audio, choose Ableton Live, then Find Ableton Live instances. Choose the exact track, Rack chain and device. Review the Key and Scale and press Send to selected instance.
  6. Check Auto-Tune’s display. A successful send requires the host’s key/scale readback to match. Undo Ableton Live transfer restores the previous values only if those settings and the target are still unchanged.

What the picker checks

It scans the current Set’s tracks, returns, Main track and nested Rack chains, including Rack return chains. Labels include track and device numbers so duplicate names remain distinguishable. Exactly one compatible instance is selected automatically. Multiple instances require a choice. Discovery never sends settings.

The script keeps references to the actual Live device and parameter objects. It refuses removed or replaced effects, changes to the exposed controls, a changed Set, or movement to another track or Rack chain. Renaming a track or reordering devices within the same chain keeps the destination identity. Find again when a selection expires after five minutes.

Only Key and Scale are written. It does not send audio, MIDI notes, Detune, Retune Speed, or an Auto-Key broadcast. Auto-Key receiving can remain off. Automated, overridden, disabled or macro-controlled Key/Scale parameters and frozen tracks are refused. Use a non-automated test instance first.

Editions and formats

Discovery recognizes Auto-Tune Artist, Pro, Access, EFX, Hybrid and UAD Real-Time names using the host’s original device name. Each instance must expose unique Key and Scale controls plus readable musical labels. Generic formats need readable previews for all twelve roots and Major/Minor. Artist 9.2 AU uses its checked 24-control layout; Real-Time X 11.8 AU uses a separate checked 23-control layout. Live’s AU preview returns decimals, so both require matching current musical labels. Real-Time X VST3 supplies preview labels and uses the general per-instance mapper. Keep that default layout intact, and use a Major, Minor or Chromatic starting scale. Numeric or inconsistent current labels are refused; try opening the plug-in editor and Find again. The connection waits for updated musical labels before confirming any transfer. Recognition and passing simulations do not prove compatibility with a real edition or AU/VST3 format.

Connection trouble

Keep Key Lab running. Select the control surface once, leave its MIDI ports at None, and Find again. A disconnected or duplicate connection produces an explanation. A timeout is not a success: check the plug-in before retrying. Do not start a second Key Lab server or duplicate control surface while testing.

The installer currently supports the default Mac User Library only. Live 10’s Python 2 environment is unsupported. Live 12.4.7 is live-tested with Artist 9.2.0 AU and Real-Time X 11.8.0 AU/VST3. Live 11 and other Live 12 versions are unverified. This independent control surface relies on Live’s Python host interface, which is not a vendor support guarantee and may change.
